Late the following afternoon Laredo Mossop stomped into the jail dragging a protesting livery owner with him. He threw the man to the floor and stood over him menacingly.

‘Now, you sniveling son of a bitch, tell the sheriff what you told me.’

The cowering man glanced up at Lawson and returned his gaze to the floor. Mossop smacked him on the back of his balding head with an open hand.

‘Speak!’

‘The girl came and got his horse last night,’ the man blurted out.

It took Lawson a moment to work out who he was talking about. Then he remembered the food tray.

‘You mean the one who brings the food to the jail?’

The livery owner nodded and copped another hit for his trouble.

‘Yes!’ he squealed. ‘She took it just after dark.’

‘Did she tell you what she wanted it for?’

‘Yes. She said she was goin’ to bust Swift out.’

‘Did she happen to say where she was going afterward?’ Lawson sneered.

‘No.’

Whack.

‘No, honest.’

Lawson then looked at Laredo.

We know for sure now that it was her, but we still don’t know where they went.’

‘What about the mine?’ Mossop pointed out.

‘You saw the blood he left behind. He wouldn’t have made the ride out there. No, he’s close.’

Lawson dropped his gaze to the livery owner.

‘Get out,’ he snapped.

The frightened man scrambled to his feet and fled through the door. Mossop started to follow him.

‘Where are you goin’, Laredo?’ Lawson asked him.

‘To tear the damn town apart,’ Laredo snarled. ‘If he’s here, I’ll find him.’
